lumps around eyes from ticks?

Question
I have a 2 year old Small Munsterlander Pointer bitch. She recently started having a lot of white specks in her snout that turned out to be tiny ticks.  I have removed what I can with a tick picker and think I have got most of them out (around 40 of them over a couple of weeks), but I have noticed some very small lumps (that show up as small pale spots in the fur) at the point where the whiskers come out of the "eyebrows" with one or two around the inside corners of her eyes, just where the smooth tissue meets fur. Do you have any idea what this is, whether it is a reaction to the (British!) ticks, or how I can make it go away?

I would be very grateful for your assistance in this.

Answer
If the proposed "tick" looks like little white specks of dandruff, they are likely not ticks at all but are Cheyletiella parasitivorax, a species of mite commonly called walking dandruff. There is another species that live inside the nasal passages and are commonly seen walking around on the nose and mouth region, they are also white in color. If they are very small it is likely one of these instead of a tick. Ticks and mites are in the same family and look a lot alike. You should have your veterinarian examine your dog so that they can be properly identified and treated. If you are certain that it is ticks, I have not heard of any species like what you are talking about, but I am not familliar with British ticks and therefore can not be certain. I will however comment on the pale spots. Are your certain that they have not been there before? You may not have noticed them until you got down close and examined the face. They could simply be spots that are natural for your dog, areas where melanocytes are not present in the skin and thus the skin is not pigmented. Also on the note of ticks, they do inject a agent that causes the area where they are feeding to not be felt by the dog. A reaction to this agent could be the pale spots you are seeing, and if so should go away once the ticks are off the animal. My best advice is to see your veterinarian and get his/her advice. He/she should be more familiar with tick/mite species in your region. You may also consider a tick preventative such as frontline, which lasts for 1-3 months with each application and kills ticks and fleas. It is available from your veterinarian. Hope this helped.
