Question
I have a 3 years old blue chow. He is an inside dog and is very well mannered. Recently within the last 2 weeks he has been throwing up (both after eating and hours later), had an accident in his kennel (never happened before and only in for about 3 hours)and this morning it looked like he was having a seizure. He also has been lately "clicking" his teeth when just standing staring off in space. is there something wrong or is this just a normal activity. This is my 3rd chow and never have i seen these characteristics. I have had him since he was 4 weeks old. Thank you.

Answer

Hi RaeLee,

I agree, it sounds like your dog has been having seizures, that of course has nothing to do with previous Chows you've owned who were not having seizure problems.

Write down the date, time and and how long the seizure seems to last. Have your dog examined by a veterinarian.  Most seizure disorders can easily be controlled with medication.  It is very important to know the pattern of seizures in your dog, so your veterinarian can determine if the treatment is helping. Not treating the seizures can be very dangerous, depending on the kind of seizure, it's duration and frequency, they can cause brain damage and even death. So, having your dog examined by your vet isn't something to put off.

If you got your dog from a breeder, you should talk to him or her. Many kinds of seizure disorders are due to hereditary, and may be covered by a health guarantee, if you have one.

Best of luck,
Patti
