Question
QUESTION: Hi Nancy,
I hope you can answer my question  My rat terrier which was adopted from a shelter is having a problem pooping.  When he poop he squeals real loud and barks at his behind.  I have taken him to the vet hospital where he has stayed.  they have observed his problem and seen videos that I have taken.  They have also put him on a high fiber diet (dry and can) to soften his poop and checked his anal glands.  None of this has worked.  He is now not playful and trys to hold his poop.  We have to carry him outside and rub his back to try to ease his discomfort.  If you are unable to assist me can you please send me in the right direction.  Note, I plan to take him to a different vet tomorrow.

ANSWER: Sandra,
Hi, I am pretty sure this will help you.  Give him a half teaspoon (to start) of mineral oil.  If you need to, you can work that up to one teaspoon.  Let him lick it off the spoon if he will.  Also, give him some magnesium, a very small dose,  quarter of a pill, you can mix that in his food.  Make sure none of the food you are giving him has rice in it, because that is very binding.  Add some string beans to his meal and give him some real dark meat chicken as well.
Get back to me in about five days and see if this does the trick, ok?

ANSWER: Hi,
No, your pup is not having the same problem. It wound up her dog was eating his toys and was getting stopped up with the stuffing.  Take her off any rice dog food, (that is the same advice).  Put her on a sensitive stomach dog food. Proplan has a good one.  See if you you can bring a sample to your vet to see if she has any worms or any bacteria in her stool.  If I were to make a guess, it would be that either she is eating something that has upset her stomach, or she has picked up a bacteria.

Also, check around her anus as night with a flash light, to see if you see any rice like seeds.  That is tapeworm, sometimes they are whole segments that move around.  I don't think this is the case, but it cant hurt to eliminate that.  They usually get them after a bout of fleas.

You can try mineral oil, but not as much as the other dog got.  Just two drops because she has a loose stool already at times and you don't want to escalate that, but it might help with the other part.

If you have an antibiotic from another time, you might try to give her a tiny piece of that, if it helps, then you know it is probably a bacteria.

Hope this helps you out.  I am pretty sure she needs an antibiotic, so keep at the vet about this, just ask if he will try it out and see if that helps.  If that is the problem, it will after the first pill.

QUESTION: she has ate Royal Canin mini adult 27 her whole life, she turns 7 in september. The bag says it has brewers rice, rice in its many incrediates.  She has never had any issues with fleas as we bath her and use frontline. its weird as she always turns around looking at her anus, how should I go about changing her food just cold turkey one to the other would be ok?  When she has a hanger poop not dropping off she wont let me near her butt to help pull it off. Most times she can run it off. I feed her twice a day as she is very active.  Thanks for your help and let me know about the food change and any other suggestions. I talked to the vet about it awhile back and kinda got blown off.  Thanks, Rick

Answer
Never make a quick change. Introduce it slowly.  Mix it with her regular food.  royal Canin is a good food, the rice may just be helping to bind her.   Have you ever had her anal glands expressed?  She could have a build up in there, too.

Still take a stool sample down to the vet, see if she has a higher bacteria count than normal.  And one or two DROPs of  mineral oil wouldn't hurt.

I hear a duck and potato food is good too.  See if you can find Proplan turkey and barley in a can and mix it with the Royal Canin for a start, that may just to the trick.
