Question
HI,
I have a 14 month old male boxer. Recently my vet diagnosed him with food allergies. She wants to put him on Hill's Science Diet Prescription food. It is very expensive. I'm looking for an alternative to this. Or should I try this for a while? He is allergic to chicken, beef, all grains and gluten. I'm at a loss as to how to help him. I heard Blue Buffalo is a good food, any input on this food? I want what's best for him. He has hair loss, alot of scratching, ear infections. No, he doesn't have mites. He's been scraped 3 times for that.

Answer
**dog foods and recipes;  Did you try the pooch recipe yet?  I would be glad to help you formulate a recipe..

Colette - YES - I am glad you contacted me!  The Hill's products are an awful smell and very expensive.  LET's home cook for your boxer boy.  VERY easy and you can cook up 1 x per week and freeze - SEE here :

Poochie Meat Cakes

INGREDIENTS

1  cups brown rice ( YOU Can use some small pasta rather than rice)
2 cups water
1 large potatoe, grated
2 large carrots, grated
3.5 pounds ground lamb
4 eggs
1 dash salt
1/8 cup olive oil
1 cups regular rolled oats  *( you can switch this to "x-tra brown" rice if you want)
use a dog vitamin to balance out her diet.
I use NuVET for most of my clients...

YOU can get NuVET in a powder or wafer...

..DIRECTIONS
1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Grease 28 cups of 3 large muffin tins.
2.In a medium saucepan, combine the rice with water. Bring to a boil over high heat, uncovered, and cook 10 minutes. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 20 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool several minutes, then fluff with a fork and set aside.

3.In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, carrots,  ground lamb, and eggs. Mix ingredients together using your hands or a sturdy spoon. Add salt, olive oil, rolled oats, and rice; mix well.

4.Fill each muffin cup with some of the meat mixture, and pat down the to make it firm. Bake 45 minutes, or until surface feels set. Cool on a rack 10 minutes or longer.

5.Remove the meat cakes by turning the muffin tin upside down over a sheet of aluminum foil. Tap each muffin cup to release the cake. Refrigerate or freeze in sealed plastic bags.
NOTE: Do not feed to dogs while still hot.

YOU can mix and match this recipe - Add a gluten free pasta small shells rather than rice.
Look for brown rice - no white rice.
Only use lamb with this recipe for your allergic kid.

We make this all the time. I add liver that I chop into fine bits and we make it in 9x13 pans instead of muffin pans then cut it into squares and mix it in with dry dog food.
It's time consuming to make and makes alot, but we just freeze it and it lasts for weeks and weeks.

I hope you like this recipe -  There are no dog foods you can feed that are healthy like this recipe.
Give it a try and good luck!
