High Carbohydrate diet vs High Protein Diet & Vetsulin dosage

Question
There is enough conflicting information on the web now that supports both a high carbohydrate diet and a high protein diet for diabetic dogs.  I am seriously confused now.

My dog, 13 yrs, very trim, 17lbs. was diagnosed with diabetes last year this time and also Cushings 2 months ago.  My primary vet and I have him on a high protein diet; mostly organic chicken with greens; broccoli, green beans, collard, any green; two meals with an afternoon treat. His dosage of vetsulin was 9 units.  He was for the most part stable.

I needed to go out of town and it ended up being for 2 months unfortunately..and I had to use a clinic because my vet isn't set up for boarding. The clinic didn't have enough chicken and broccoli, so they switched his food to Science Diet ID, which has only 6% protein, but it does have lots of vitamins and minerals, which is good.

When I picked my dog up he was very excited to see me (thank God)looked excellent and was very enthusiastic to get going. I bought 2 cases of the ID without even thinking...they told me he was stable, down to 4 units vetsulin, 7am %26 7pm strict schedule and that he really liked the food.

My vet pointed out that the ID is not the amount of protein my dog will need to keep his sugars balanced.  He and I agreed to put him back on chicken, but with 1/2 ID and wean him off the ID.

I gave him the 1/2 chix 1/2 ID with his meds and shot at 7pm. The very next day he started showing signs of lethargy, sleepiness, lack of enthusiasm. I stayed with the same diet, and then he had two seizures on the fifth day I had him home; one in the morning 1-1/2 hour after his breakfast and 4 unit shot and one in the evening just before his dinner and shot.  They were grand mal seizures; short lived but the after seizure behavior last 2 hours each time.

I got him to my vet the following morning and his sugars registered high so doc increased the vetsulin from 4 units to 5 units and it seemed to help. We did sugar checks each morning and night. The mornings were somewhat lower, 265 180, and the eves were all high.Doc increased the vetsulin to 6 units and that brings us up to Friday evening. Saturday I gave him same food and 6 units.  He crashed, and it took honey on his gums and in a tsp of wet cat food to get him to stop shaking. Saturday all day he was wobbly and disoriented.  Saturday night I read about Symogyi and I am wondering if that is what is happening.  Last nigh he was so lethargic I gave him only 4 units and he stopping shaking and went to sleep.  This morning, Sunday morning I gave him same food and again 4 units.  He is better, I see recovery, but he isn't running to me with his leash.

I am so worried about his diet and what I should be doing. He was sedentary in the clinic at home he gets a fair amount of exercise walking around, going outside and playing with the cats.

DO you think my goal should be to return to mostly chicken and greens?  And can you explain why there is such opposite diets being recommended now.

Answer
I spent over an hour writing to you and the letter got eaten by cyber space. I am sick over this as it had some wonderful info for you. PLEASE CALL ME AT:914-589-1094 and I will discuss this issue with you now since I don't have the time to type all of my suggestions all over again. I am so sorry that this happened but not only will I discuss this with YOU but I will also put you in contact with the brilliant woman (no charges from her because she adores animals) whom I credit with saving my very sick Yorkies digestive life.

To anwser your question directy though--YES, GO BACK TO YOUR DIET. Also, you can blame your vet for your dog's backslide. That ID and all prescriptioin food is rot gut..SORRY TO DIEAGREE WITH YOU because you think it is good food--it it not. Your vet, like my beloved vet, IS IN BUSINESS and they know so little about NUTRITION...THEY DO BELIEVE THEIR SALESPEOPLE AND THE MARKETING HOGWASH THEY ARE GIVEN AS THEY THEN SELL THIS FOOD AS GREAT STUFF. i WOULD rather feed my dog twinkies. This prescription dog food has a form of fiber in it that is indigestible and I feel strongly that this is what happened to your dog--plus the lack of protein and the MYRIAD OF INGREDIENTS that are LAB CREATED AND SYNTHETIC. If your vet was really savvy about nutrition he would have continued the chicken he ran out of--he could have gone to a store. After all, you dog has serious issues and he should have known better than to simply switch DIETS $$$$$$ And now he sold you two cases of it?? This makes me very sad.

I wrote you at least 2-3 pages full of info but really cannot do that again now. Please call me and I will do what I can to help you PLUS give the email address and phone number of the gal that I am in touch with very consistently. Ok? YOu will need to start supplementing your dog's diet if you are going to home cook and I have ingredients and low carb veggies I want you to use. I hope you do call....I am sick over my 'eaten' letter...damn. Susan
