Question
I have a Chihuaha poodle mix who is almost 1 year old. I just got him yesterday and took him to the vet and they said that he is really skinny and you can see his bones. He weighs 5lbs 11 oz. What should I feed him to help him gain atleast a little bit of weight????

Answer
Hi,
sounds like you saved this dog's life...kudos to you. I have three little dogs, two of whom are rescues, so I love people like you.

First of all, feed him three times a day, smaller meals. Consider home cooking cause it's not that tough. If you do home cook, then try using boneless, skinless chicken breasts lightly steamed. Be sure to buy hormone, antibiotic, steroid free meat or as close as you can get and afford. Buy organic zucchini and cucumbers. Pulverize these in a Magic Bullet of juicer and then supplement these meals. I use an excellent probiotic, digestive enzyme, APA blend vitamin in addition to preparing the above. Feed him three times a day, smallish amts. Don't overload your dog.

Please write to me at DazzlinDaawg@aol.com if you have other questions. I have two links I want you to check out, one of which has a great video that you should watch.

If you are going to feed commercially, do you know WHAT you want to feed him? Would you consider feeding him raw with a food like PRIMAL OR BRAVO? THERE IS ALSO Stella and Chewy's on the market..good stuff. Keep his diet rice, wheat and gluten free or you are asking for more troubles.

Take your time introducing anything new, be patient and if nothing is seriously wrong with your new pooch, he should start to gain some weight over time. Don't rush this or you will make him sick. Give him lots of walks as this will increase his appetite. If this dog was fed previously, he obviously was not digesting or absorbing whatever he was eating. Try my suggestions and please let me know, ok?? And write to me privately if you want more help.
