10 month old black lab

Question
I have a 10 month old black lab.  She was spayed last month and ever since she came home she has been having loose stools.  I did change her food to Purina Dog Chow from Puppy Chow (mixed it to introduce it)  I took her back to the vet and she was put on an antibiotic and seemed to get better.  But now she is having soft and watery stools again.  I have a feeling it may be the food.  What can I do?  I can't afford the expensive foods.

Answer
Lisa,

Unfortunately, you get what you pay for when it comes to food and anything you find at the grocery store or discount superstore is not going to have quality ingredients. You can find affordable brands at pet stores and I would suggest looking for Premium Edge or Canidae. The cost to feed may even end up cheaper because you feed less. Since she recently took antibiotics, give her some plain yogurt (1 spoon per 10 pounds) in her meal for a few days. This will help put back the good digestive bacteria that antibiotics kill as a side effect of their intended purpose. You can also get canned plain pumpkin (not pie mix!) in the canned vegetable section of most grocery stores. Again, one spoon per 10 pounds in with her food for a few days. It acts as fiber to help firm stool but will not solve the cause.. definitely look into a slightly better food for long term health :)

Hope this helps!
