potty training problem

Question
Hello Kim,

I have a toy poodle Boosik he is 7 months old, I understand that he may be not old enough to be perfect as far as potty training, but I have a weird problem with him.
I walk him 2, sometimes 3 times a day, at specific time and feed him at speciafic time. He goes well outside. But at home, he pees at specific spot all the time, and I don't think that he pees because he wants to, because sometimes he can do it right after I walk him. I think he marks (I am not sure how it's called), because it is always a very little spot. And he can do it all the time (5-6 times a day), I will clean it and he does that again. I caught him many times in the process, so I could stop him from going, but he doesn't learn that it is bad. I crate him, so he doesn't run around all the time, but still he finds time to pee. I had neutered him 3 weeks ago, but problem haven't stopped.
Can you advise what to do with him and what could be causing this problem?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Sasha.

Answer
Hello Shash,
7 months old should be more than old enough for your dog to know to hold his urine.  He is probably returning to the same potty spots because he can still smell the old urine and thinks that its ok to go there.  Even if you can't smell the urine, your dogs nose is 1,000,000 times more powerful than yours and he can smell it through the carpet products that you use to clean the mess with.  You might try using a product from your local Pet Store that is approved for Pet Messes.

You might also try spraying the carpet with a mixture of Jalapeno juice and water where he pees to see if this will stop him. (you have to be careful though because some crazy dogs actually like the taste).

If you still can't get him to stop marking the house, you might try the Belly Band for male dogs.  Its a band that goes around the stomach and will catch the pees he does instead of it going on the carpet.  If the dog goes in the Belly Band, it will sit on his skin and make him feel uncomfortable, hopefully causing him to stop.  You can find Belly Bands at: http://www.dog-breeds.net/dog_diaper_belly_band.htm   or you can make your own at: http://www.ehow.com/how_2295386_make-belly-bands-male-dogs.html
You will want to get or make two for your dog because if he pees in one, you can let him wear the other one.

As for the neutering, it usually takes about 2 months for the testosterone to get out of the system.  Sometimes it helps with male marking, but sometimes not.

Give this a try and let me know what happens.  If he is still marking after a few more weeks, I will see what else I can come up with.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
