Brown poodle

Question

Henry the lap dog
Hi Kim,
I have a wonderful, very large brown standard poodle, whose color has faded a bit. He started out as chocolate brown, but is now a shaded cafe au lait.  That wasn't a surprise, as I knew that many browns do fade, but what I was unprepared for is the very dark brown zigzag stripe he has grown down the middle of his back.  It starts at the base of his neck and goes to the base of his tail, and is much darker than his original chocolate brown.  Also, it is a different texture than the rest of his hair, and grows faster. At his last grooming appointment, it was two inches longer than the rest.  It didn't start to appear until he was 2 years old, and he is three now.  It's unique, and I don't mind it, but I was wondering if you have ever seen that before.  His vet and groomers have all said they've never seen anything like it.  I've attached a photo for you to see.  We love him dearly in spite of his weirdness - he attracts attention everywhere we go!
Thank you,
Val

Answer
Hello Val,
I agree that he would attract attention, that is very unique.

You usually see this in dogs that have had an injury that damages the hair follicles and the hair grows back in in the color it was when the dog was a puppy.  That is what I first thought when you mentioned this, but when you didn't mention if the dog had ever been injured (such as an open wound or a hot spot, I was as baffled as the Vet and Groomer were.
The only other thought could be that he might have a parti gene in his background that would cause him to get patches like that, though I have never seen the color develop after the dog is born.  The puppies are usually born with the color pattern on them.

I wish I could be of further assistance with this, but I have never seen anything like this before either.

Your dog is a handsome man though.  Pets to him.
