Std. poodle cant keep herself clean!

Question
I have a female standard poodle that is a little over 4 months old. Since we brought her home she has been peeing down her legs when she goes to the bathroom. She squats like normal, but it usually ends up all over her legs. Her fur gets all matted around her privates and inner legs. I bathe her a lot because it is gross, but it needs to stop. Is this normal? could she have a urinary infection or is this a training issue? I have never owned a poodle before and couldn't find the answer online.

Answer
Hello Beth,
This is kind of normal in dogs.  Try having her private area shaved close so that there isn't hair matted up there.  This may change the angle the urine is coming out and stop her from peeing down her leg.  You might also try changing her position when she is out with you.  When walking, if she starts peeing and you notice that she is hitting her leg, move her forward or back a bit to change the angle she is squating at.

I wish there was something more I could suggest, but even my dog pees on his legs sometimes when he squats to go.  Although its his front legs he pees on rather than his back ones.
