Question
QUESTION: hello, i have a 5 month old male, who i had since he was 6 weeks old, i just got a 6 year old female, for free because the owners did not want her anymore they wanted a "family dog" (low maintenence, my question is this my male never barks but the female seems to bark all the time and it is quite annoying, i believe this was something that they neglected to tell me, i was under the impression if they were not alone that they would be fine seeing that they are a pack dog breed any suggestions would be very helpful thank you

ANSWER: Hi Peter,

Huskies don't usually bark.  When she is barking, is she trying to tell you something?  Like she wants food, outside, or wants to play?

The owners of this dog, must not of owned her long or know nothing about huskies, since huskies are "family dogs" that require to be a part of the family "activities" and a "child" that needs to be exercised.

My husky never barks unless she is playing or needs my attention for personal needs.  If she is barking for no reason at all, then I would suggest a bark collar.  You can buy one at a pet store, but plan on spending $80.00 on a good one.  She can also not be use to the environment yet, if you just got her, so give her a little more time to adjust.

Good Luck.  If you have anymore questions, please ask.

Thanks,
Laura

QUESTION: alright ill try all that and let you know, thank you, but i have another question, how old is old enough to start feeding and puppy or dog regular adult dog food instead of puppy food

Answer
Hi Peter,

When dog reaches about 75% to 80% of their adult weight is the ideal time to switch foods.  Male Huskies range between 45 to 60 lbs for adult weight.  I would recommend waiting until he is 75% of his adult weight. This should occur around 12 months.  It could be before or after.  Sometimes owners wait until they puppy is 14 months.

A reminder about switching.  You should mix the puppy food and adult food together for the first three days. This will reduce diarrhea.
Day 1: 75% puppy food with 25% adult
     Day 2: 50% puppy food, 50% adult
Day 3: 25% puppy food with 75% adult
So by day 4 he will be eating 100% adult dog food.

If you have anymore questions, please ask.  Good Luck.

Thanks,
Laura
