Nine week old siberian husky/ characteristics of the eyes

Question
My husband and I are considering purchasing another husky from a certain breeder that we have already have done business with. Our first husky is perfect in every way, but we received him at 12 weeks of age. Our current husky's pupils are perfectly symmectrical. The puppy we are looking at now looks as if the right pupil is looking to the left somewhat while the other pupil is looking straight at you. Is this normal for a nine week old puppy considering we got our first husky at 12 weeks? (Note: One of the other puppies in the litter can't see that well. Is this possibly a birth defect within this spcific litter?)

Answer
This one is tough to say without being there to examine the dogs, and I would recommend a vet check them out more thoroughly.  However, it is not entirely uncommon to have a dog with a "lazy" eye at an early age, but 9 week seems a little late for that to still be there.  Add to that if one of the other puppies has eye problems, it very well could be a genetic problem in the litter.  While you may have already done business with this breeder, I would double check things with them.  Parents should be cleared on both hips and eyes for Siberian Huskies (CERF for eyes, and OFA for hips usually), and I would definitely make sure that the parents have both of those certifications.  Otherwise, I would talk to the breeder about your concerns.  At that point, you can go forward with either one of these pups (if you feel that the potential for problems is something you can deal with), wait for another litter, or contact a new breeder.

For me personally, if the dog seems to have a good personality and doesn't have any real vision problems that you can detect, I would have no problem getting the pup even if it did have some eye issues.  If the dogs are tested and have their CERF number, your risk of blindness or serious retinal issues decreases substantially and you might just have a mild eye muscle problem.  Hope that helps some.
