Puppy diet

Question
We have a five week old puppy that we brought home two days ago, she was fully weened when we took her but now that she is on a diet of milk, pablum formula and some dry food, we have noticed that her bottom is a little pink and swollen at the anus. Is this normal for newly weened puppies or is their something we are doing wrong? She seems to enjoy her food and has no diarrhea so we are unsure. Thanks in advance!

Answer
I would cut out the milk.  Most dogs can't digest the lactose in cows' milk.  Move to all puppy chow, although you may need to soften it with water for another week.  At 4 months, switch her to an adult chow based on the same thing as the current puppy chow, chicken, beef, whatever.

5 weeks is too early to leave the mother and litter.  She still has dog socialization to learn.  Try to find her other puppies to play with.  Be very careful to keep her away from any unvaccinated puppies.  Your puppy may or may not be safe if exposed to parvo.  If the mother passed immunity on, the shots will not take until it wears off.  After that, one shot, 2 weeks before being exposed to parvo, is all that is needed.  The usual practice is to give a series of shots hoping to hit the window between the mother's immunity wearing off and being exposed to parvo.  See http://www.pressenter.com/~dvmvis/canparvo.htm

Typical Goldens do enjoy their food.  The little balls of fluff are cuter than healthy.  Keep her down to a half cup of chow 3 times a day until you see a waist.  See http://www.photolocker.net/images/Labman/proplanc.jpg
