Question
Hi,
I need help with my 5 year old golden retriever. If we do not chain him in the backyard he will run to the fence and jump it.  He does not recall well so we have to chase him through the neighborhood.  Any suggestions on how to train him to stay in his yard?
thanks

Answer
For most dogs, training is only good for controlling behavior when you are around.  Once a dog learns it can jump a fence, usually the only remedy is something like extending the fence or adding an electric wire.

I don't like to see a dog left by itself in a fenced yard.  Too many things can happen.  In addition to escaping one way or another, it can be stolen, teased, or other abuse plus suffering from the heat, cold, and rain.  Far better to be shut up in a crate in the house.  Of course, all day is long to leave a dog crated.  If nobody can make it home over lunch, perhaps a neighbor could give it a break or a professional dog walker.

Another solution is doggy day care.  Discuss fence jumping with the provider.
