QuestionWe are looking into purchasing a golden retriever puppy and I am wondering if there is a minimum age that the dogs should be bred-the ones we are looking at have a mother who is almost 2, but the male is only 8-9 months old (this would be his first time). Is this ok? Any things to be concerned about? It seems like a very reputable breeder;someone had just seemed surprised at the male's age. Thank you for your expertise.
AnswerNO Golden should EVER be used for breeding until after it is X-rayed at a year old and Certified by the OFA. That breeder is an enemy of dog lovers. I don't think the AKC will register a litter with the sire under a year old. Certainly he isn't old enough to be proven free of allergies, seizures, etc. Who knows what other corners they may be cutting?
