dog in first heat.

my english bulldog went into her first heat @ a year and  2wks old.  i just returned from a trip when my pet sitter said she started bleeding about 3 days ago.  how long does the heat process last?  i noticed the excessive blood when she looksed like she's going to pee.  does she pee blood the whole time?  also any extra care for her that i should know about?  i gave her a bath to clean her up, i hope thats okay. any advice will be helpful as this is my first female dog.

First heats are generally pretty intense and you may see more bleeding that you would at a later heat. The cycle last 21 days but the worst should be over by the end of the second week. It may appear like she's peeing blood, but she's not.

I wouldn't give her anymore baths. During the heat cycle,t he cervix is open and exposed to any potential bacteria. I wouldn't allow her to sit for any length of time in dirt or sand.

If you get to a pet store, they have pads that you can put on her that will help with the mess.
