Question
I have an olde english bulldoggee that i mated with a male english bulldog and now im worried if everything is going to be OK.  It was done by artificial insemenation and she is pregnant any pointers will be greatly appreciated.  From what i read about my dog is that she is a free whelper and no c senction is needed. Is this true or false?

Answer
Brian,

It is impossible to say that she is a free-whelper and will not need a c-section.  That you will not know until she has puppies, unless you are saying she has had a litter before.

Most people that raise bulldogs just go ahead and go for the surgery instead of finding out half-way through whelping that there is a problem.

We have had some successful natural whelping but a majority of the time, it is not successful.  We have either had to go in for the c-section or we have lost puppies.

I know they say that the olde English bulldog is suppose to be better at natural whelping, but you will not know until the time comes.

If you decide not to go for a c-section, you really need to get someone close to you that can help you when it comes time for the birth - kind of like a midwife.  You may have to pull a puppy.  Most likely, you will have to get the puppy out of the sac and break the cord.  You will have to make sure all the puppies nurse.

You should also let your vet know about the time your puppies are due, just in case you have to call or make a trip to see him.
