Question
Hello Jannie,
My question is in regards to my puppy boxers' weight and eating habits. I understand he is still growing but he looks extremely skinny. I have tried various dry foods and sometimes mix in a can of wet. He loves the wet but i don't want him to get used to it too much. He currently weighs 52 pounds and is probably a little below average in height. His dad was 102 pounds and his mother 75 so I was thinking he would be somewhere in the middle. I have decided to free feed him leaving out his bowl which he picks at throughout the day. I have tried various supplements to boost his appetite. It seems like all he wants to do is run and play. The vet does admit he is underweight and has said he is worm free. Any advice would be great. I apologize about asking a question that has probably been asked over and over again but I have not been able to locate a good answer for my specific situation. Thanks Jannie!!

Answer
A good, all natural (NO corn and NO corn glutens in ingredients) puppy is still best for him. Check with your local pet stores for goods and read the ingredients and select the one you can afford.

You can offer cheese for treats and training.

Add smooth, creamy peanut butter to (inside) a KONG toy...

Add whole, plain (unflavored) yogurt and a raw egg to his puppy food once a day for a few weeks. Or alternating days, to help add weight, etc.

Also, have a vet test him for thyroid problems-- it can cause under wieght.
