bed wetting

Question
QUESTION: my 6month old boxer is wetting her bedding and sometimes other soft furnishings . she is not yet fully house trained but i think this is making it harder as she doesn't realise she should not wet her bed.

ANSWER: At 6 months old- she should have been house trained/broken.

Why not? What happened?

You begin house training at 3-4 months old.

Now you have to begin house training and it will be harder because she is already 6 months old.

Take her outside to pee and poop and stay with her. This is for encouragement and to maintain an alpha authority.

Take her out: every morning after waking, every 20-30 minutes (for training purposes) and after each and every meal, then before bedtime for the night.

Each time she pees or poops, give her a lot of praise and attention, and even a little treat. Do not reward her if she does not pee or poop.

You can also mop up an inside pee accident with a paper towel, take the wet paper towel outside and place it on the ground where you want her to pee and poop. Then take her outside to it and let her smell it. Be sure not to leave it there or allow her to play and shred the paper towel. Dispose of it when you've introduced her to the wet paper towel.
Do this with an inside poop, too.

This lets her know that "that spot" outside is her personal pee and poop spot- and that it is okay there- and that is where to do it.

It shouldn't take more than a few weeks.

Do not spank her or chastise her, or yell at her for inside accidents. That would scare her to not pee or poop at all anywhere.

Instead, when an accident happens, take her outside to her spot each time.

She will associate the inside urine with being outside instead. Dogs love grassy areas to do their business and she will prefer it once she gets used to the routine.

QUESTION: is it unusual for a dog to wet their own bedding and still sleep on it ?? she was 5 months old when we got her and was not house trained we are doing all things stated taking out ever hour and after feeding so there is less wetting but its the bed wetting i find strange

Answer
No, it isn't strange or unusual since she wasn't house trained-- she doesn't know any better and when she was in her litter with litter mates and momma, they peed and pooped there and momma cleaned it up- so it is not unusual for her. It is the litter mate syndrome.

Continue to house train as I recommended.

If you would like, put down newspapers near the back door where you take her outside to pee, and if she pees on it, reward her.

House training isn't as hard as we think- and actually make it out to be- it's just time-consuming and extra work until the house training is achieved. Once done, it's a given :)

Be sure to take her out every 30 minutes. This not only accomplishes the need to pee, but also the association of peeing and outside. Reward system is positve: give her a treat. Just break a treat up into shared, proportional sized pieces, and give her a small piece as a reward (more economical that way)....... and soon she will "want" to go outside in order to get a treat.
