2 Male boxers

Question
I love Boxers!!  I already have an 8 almost 9 year old male boxer.  I have had him since he was 8 weeks old.  I recently acquired a 1 1/2 year old female boxer who was abused a little.  She had actually been buck shot when I got her.  They get along fine, every now and then they have there spats.  I have the opportunity to get a 2 year old male boxer however I would like to know if this would be a good idea.  I am worried about the 2 male boxers getting along and I don't want any of them to get hurt, especially my older one.

Answer
I hate to say this, but it will be difficult adding a third Boxer to the mix. An adult, that is.

It can be done, but needs supervision during the introduction period. I would imagine that your 8 almost 9 year old is the "alpha" and you don't want the 2 year old male to challenge him.

A Boxer puppy would be very easy. But if you are rescuing the 2 year old male, (kuddos to you!) I would recommend leashing both males and introducing them under supervision and allow them to sniff each other and get familiar.

You want the 2 year old male to end up being "submissive" to your 8 almost 9 year old male- which after sniffing and circling each other, the 2 year old should lay down belly up in a submissive manner. That will be a good sign that he is respecting the older male's "alpha" position.

Be sure to be equal to them all. Equal attention and love, equal treats, toys. etc. Boxers are jealous babies.

Good luck and take it slow with introductions and watch for submissiveness and do not allow either be aggressive toward the other- nip it in the bud- YOU are the real alpha!

P.S. If you can, watch Casar Millan's "Dog Whisper" on the Animal Planet. You can learn a lot from him on how dog's think and behave; and watch for all the signs.
