ANSWER: Ok Wendy, How about you make your own dog food?  I have many clients that do this:  YOU cook it up 1 x per week and freeze it.
Here is one recipe/ I have many more:
YOU will need to feed him a good supplement each day : NuVET is the BEST around - info below:

HERE is a TREAT you can Make:
Tuna Cake - Simple Recipes For Dog Food / treat

One of the simplest recipes for dog food feasts includes
Tuna Cake - perfect for those dogs that are afflicted with a kidney
disease.
This might not offer an appetizing aroma, but our dogs will be
delighted with treats like these, which often take less than ten
minutes to organize.
Begin by mashing up two cans of tuna in a large bowl; add in three
cups of flour and 2 eggs.
Take equal portions of the mixture and mould into small cakes. Now
bake at a low temperature.
It's that simply and your dog will be drooling over it for days to
come.
Various other recipes for low-protein dog food similar to this can be
prepared using other varieties of fish.

Anyway - thought some of you may want to make it : I am sure you can
use wheat flour rather than white...
This is not a Wheat Free recipe...

Food to make at home-

Buckaroo's Favorite Breakfast Meet The Buckaroo

1 pound hamburger
1 clove pressed or finely-chopped garlic ( YOU don't need garlic if you take a NuVET supplement each day)
1 cup oatmeal
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup fresh Romaine lettuce leaves (eyeball it)

Slowly cook the hamburger in a large skillet with the garlic. Drain
off half the fat into a freezer container to save for dog cookies.

Add oatmeal and water and stir while bringing to a boil Turn down the
heat, cover and simmer for 1 minute.

In a blender or food processor, puree the lettuce or chop finely (may
also be juiced). Let hamburger mixture cool before adding lettuce.

Serve a mixture of all ingredients at 1/2 cup for every 10 pounds of
dog's body weight.

The hamburger/oatmeal mixture may be stored in freezer or
refrigerator in individual portions. Keep the lettuce stored
separately in refrigerator to serve fresh with every meal as a salad.

Answer
Not sure about kidney, don't think so.....
Good vet? Call your local groomers and ask them who they like. Tell them you are new to the area and looking for a Quality vet.
