Question
Hi, I am a junior high student and I am doing a language arts project about cats. I needed to interview one or more experts on cats and I was hoping that you would be able to answer my questions. Thank you. =)

Why are cats always curious about what is going on?

Why do cats sleep so much?

Are most cats indoor or outdoor?

Do most cats prefer soft food or dry food?

If cats are meowing a lot, what could they be telling you?

Thank you for answering these questions. Please reply ASAP. I need these questions answered by the end of tomorrow, monday.

If you have any other good information that I could use for my project, please let me know. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Answer
Hi,

The best understanding of cat behavior is by Dr. Michael Foxx, so you may want to get a hold of his writings.

Anyway on to your questions:

Why are cats always curious about what is going on?

This goes back to their background as hunters.  Their curiosity helps them be attracted to things that might be prey and also, be wary of things that they might turn out to be prey for.

Why do cats sleep so much?

Cats take cat naps.  They tend to sleep lightly for many small peridds of time.  They do not seem to go into deep sleeps like humans do.  This allows them to get the rest they need yet be ready for anything that might happen while they are napping.

Are most cats indoor or outdoor?

The vast majority of cats in the world are oudoor.  However, in the USA, outdoor cats live for 3-5 years whereas indoor cats tend to live 12-15 years of age.  More and more cat owners are tending to keep their pets indoors.

Do most cats prefer soft food or dry food?

In a pinch cats will eat almost any type of cat food.  No matter what they prefer (and like humans, different cats like different things).  Wet food tends to be much better for cats than dry food.  Cats are obligate carnivores and cannot utilize plant protein.  Furthermore, carbohydrates are worse for cats than for people.  Thus cats should be very limited as to the amount of dry food they are given.

If cats are meowing a lot, what could they be telling you?

I wish I knew.  They usually want something, be it food, affection, attention, or who knows what?

I hope the above is helpful.

Best regards... Norm.
