getting a cat used to a dog

Question
How can I get my 3 year old cat used to our new 6 month old puppy?  The puppy doesn't seem hostile, but typically puppy-ish, which is scary to the cat.  We keep trying to introduce them.  But no luck. Amy

Answer
Hi Amy.  I'm not sure how long you've had the puppy, but you can expect introduction to take at least a couple weeks.  I would keep the puppy in a crate or on a leash at all times while your cat is around.  When trying to introduce them, bring them to a room where the cat can have some space but won't be able to run and hide.  You need to desensitize him by forcing him to be within a reasonable distance of the puppy for short periods several times a day.  Also, rub the puppy down with a towel and then let your cat smell it to help him get familiar with the dog, at least by scent.  There isn't any magic measure you can take.  Over time, they'll get used to each other.
