Engorged Lactating Queen

Question
Our Siamese mother cat had two kittens we just sold at 8 weeks.  The kittens were only nursing occassionally.  Now the mother is engorged, but without fever.  How long should it take to dry up and anything we should do?

Answer
Generally when my kittens leave at 12 weeks, the usual age for kittens to leave their mom, the queen has weaned them naturally in such a way that she does not suffer with this problem.  You may want to keep your kittens a bit longer next time as it is helpful to them, to mom and to the new owners as they learn so many manners from their mom between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks.  Litter box habbits, appropriate play, not to mention the comfort of nursing and the comfort of mom as she does wean them.

I would apply warm compresses and cabbage leaves as believe it or not this will help dry her up!  :)  Should be just a few days before she's dried up completely.
