Pregnant queen a.s.a.p

Question
We have a pregnant cat she is only 10 months old. We think she is in her last week of pregnancy. You can quite clearly see the kittens moving from across the room. Today however we noticed she is winking one eye and the third eye drifts over now and again. We are a bit worried that a infection could affect the pregnancy. She has also been meowing alot today and she is usually very quiet. Especially in the last hour or so. She has quietened down now and gone in her box we provided. Do you think she is close to having kittens? Is there anything we should do about the eye? We read she will start licking any discharge but she can't seem to reach as she is too round. Also she is quite a small Cat. Do you think she will have any birthing problems, being young and small.
Thank you

Answer
Colin,

I am sorry I am just getting to your question as I have not been online since early Saturday morning.

I would not worry about the eye at this time.  You can always deal with it after the kittens are born.  Usually a mild antibiotic like amoxycillin  is a good bet in cases like this (it does not cross the milk barrier and get to the kittens).

She can have kittens immediately or go on this way for a few days.  Every queen is different.

As to the age, 10 months is a bit young for kittens, so you should arrange with your vet to be able to bring her in on a moments notice should she have trouble.

The vets can also x-ray the queen and kittens and, with a caliper, measure the kittens' heads to see if they will fit through the pelvis.

If she is in serious hard labor and has not produced the beginnings of a kitten in about an hour, she will probably need help.

Please keep me posted.

Good luck and best regards... Norm.
