Vomitting

Question
Our cat is barely 3 years old. He is a neutered male siamese.  He was neutered when we got him.  We rescued him from a shelter over a year ago(about 15 months).  He eats Fancy Feast canned and Purina Indoor Cat Formula dry.  He hacks and vomits alot, several times a week.  I have never seen a hairball in the vomit.  It is always undigested food.  The dry looks unchewed as does the canned if it comes in pieces, like roasted chicken.  He vomits several times a week. Otherwise he appears to be perfectly healthy and happy. We have changed to feeding him very small portions several times a day to no avail.

Answer
Hi Linda, often going to the smaller portions will help so that is discouraging. The other option is to slow him down so that he eats slower and doesn't overeat. There are two ways to do this.
1. Give him something that he doesn't like as much so that he eats slower and doesn't eat more than he has room for. ie. you could just give him the dry food.. no canned food.. or try a canned food that he is not as fond of but is still nutritious
2. There are specific brands of dry cat food on the market that are for sensitive cats. They are less upsetting on the stomach plus they are often shaped differently so that it is not as easy for the cat to "inhale" the pieces. Sometimes they have a wave to them, others have a triangular shape with edges that need to be gnawed off before swallowing. You would need to go to a specialty pet food store and ask them what brands they have available for this problem and you should be able to find one or two suitable ones. I always recommend dry food for your cat anyways as it keep the teeth and mouth healthier and it is usually a more balanced diet. Then for treats you can give him a safe beefy bone to chew on that he can't swallow or vomit up !!
Good luck, and let me know if these don't work and we can look at other options.
