Question
i have 3 cats. 2 females and one male that is fixed.  one of my female cats likes to pee on stuff. she doesnt care what it is.  she uses the cat box also. but when i scold her she gets mad and pees on something in front of me and glares at me.  is she just a little witch or will get her fixed help.  my other female cat is starting to do the same thing.

Answer
Hi Connie.  Getting them fixed ought to help!  Most of my female cats who were not fixed used to pee all over the place, especially on plastic bags and anything new that came into the house.  And it was worse around the time they went into heat.  I'm glad to say that spaying them has eliminated the behavior in all of them.

However, because urinating outside the box could be a sign of a potentially serious medical problem, you should seek veterinary attention right away.  Urinary tract infections, kidney problems, diabetes, and bladder stones are common causes of litter box problems.  It may be the first cat has a medical problem, and the other is just copying her behavior.

Also, it may be a good idea to add another litter box if you've only got one or two.  Preferably, your household should have four boxes (one for each cat, plus one).  You might also want to try different litters.  Most cats prefer unscented clumping litter.  There's a litter on the market called Cat Attract, which is guaranteed to draw cats who haven't been using the litter box consistently back to the box, using herbs.  You can find a retailer through their site, www.preciouscat.com.  If you're using hooded boxes, try an open box.  Some cats prefer these.

You should clean any areas the cats have peed on with an enzymatic cleaner.  Cat urine contains a lot of fat, and fat molecules are sticky.  This makes urine stains very difficult to remove.  Enzymatic cleaners contain enzymes which break down fat molecules so you can remove the stains completely.  Removing the stains will prevent your kitty from returning to pee there again.  The two enzymatic cleaners I recommend are Nature's Miracle, available at pet stores, and Greased Lightning Orange Blast, available at grocery stores.

I really think spaying them both will solve your problem.  If, after you have them spayed and have ruled out medical conditions, they are still not using the box consistently, please write back, and we can address some other causes of urinating outside the box.
