lump on cats stomach

Question
We found a lump on our cats belly down close to her groin, it does not seem to hurt her at all, is this cause for alarm or is this fairly a fairly common thing in cats?

Answer
Renee,

Lumps are often benign accumulations of fat, known as lipomas. But it could also be a malignant tumor. The only way to know for sure is for a vet to do a needle aspirate. That is where the vet sucks up some cells from the lump to see what kind of cells they are. It is not a painful procedure. If the lump is benign it needs to be checked annually (or how often the vet recommends). If it interferes with movement then it needs to be removed.

If the lump is a malignant tumor then you need to discuss further procedures with your veteriarian.

Hope this helps answer your question,

Carol
