2 litters, all died or stillborn

Question
Please can you help to understand what has gone wrong? I have a domestic cat smurphy who has had 2 litters, the first litter there were 5 kittens, mum rejected them, and we tried to hand feed them but they died one by one, the last to go made it to 5 days old. I think they were premature as they were small with little fur.
The second litter she gave to on Tuesday, the first - breech-was born at 9.45am, he was a little bigger than the last litter and covered in fur, mum fussed over him straight away and she didn't reject it until the next day! The other two kittens were born after midnight and stillborn. The surviving kitten died a couple of hours ago. Smurphy still looks very pregnant, and i was wondering if its possible for cats to have a double pregnancy? I have decided to get Smurphy done as i cant go through this heartbreak again, if she defiantly is not still pregnant, would it be ok to have her done so soon after giving birth?
I would be grateful for any advice many thanks

Answer
Tracey,

Yes, it is very possible that there were actually two litters in two stages of development. Also, after a litter is born, it usually takes a few days for the uterus to shrink back to normal. However, I would go back to the vet with her to make sure all is OK.

I would consult with your veterinarian about when they will feel comfortable about spaying her.  Birthing does not take quite so much out of the female as nursing the litter does.  Usually, a few weeks after birth where no kittens have been nursed, it is OK to have the female spayed.

Not all females seem to be able to have kittens OK, so your decision to spay is a very sound, compassionate decision!!!!!

Best regards... Norm.
