Is my kitten blind?

16:00:24

Question
My 5 week old kitten had a nasty accident when it was 2 weeks old.  there was a big bruise between it's eyes, and it spent the next day and a half just laying on it's back meowing.  i syringe-fed him kitten milk when i saw that it's breathing was regular again (about 11pm the same day of accident), and he has since re-joined the litter.
Only recently i have noticed that he does not follow my finger unless i scrape it along the carpet.  Also, it falls a lot - especially off steps.
Sometimes he will 'sleep' on his back and his pupils will almost close, and the eyes roll in the head, then it paws at it's eyes and mouth and rhythmically screams a few times before chewing on it's paw.
When he is picked up, he will meow.  Also, if i sit him on my lap he will almost fall off before finding my chest and snuggling close.  He seems to follow scent rather than sight.
He is feeding from mum and the saucer very well, and enjoys playing with his sisters, but there is a feeling that something is not quite right.

Is he in your oppinion blind, or even spastic?

Answer
Hi Kelly,

I'm sorry your kitty had an accident, but how great that you're taking such good care of him.  Its possible that he had a brain injury that caused blindness but it sounds like there's more going on than that.  The other symptoms you mention indicate he may have some neurological problems as well.  He should be due for his first shots pretty soon anyway so I would have a vet examine him and he might be able to put him on something like steroids to reduce any brain swelling, if that's the problem.  At any rate the vet can evaluate the kitten and you'll have a better understanding of what's going on.  The fact that he's eating and playing is very good.
