Question
Our cat gave birth to her first litter on Friday night/ sat morning in a box under the bay window. She doesnt seem to want to stay with her kittens and we keep putting her back in the box where she will groom and nurse a short while then is off again. Now she has moved the kittens underneath the couch but still keeps leaving them. How often should she be nursing them? Should i perhaps move box and family to the spare bedroom so they are confined as a family unit?

Answer
Hayley,

She has moved her kittens because she did not feel safe where they were.

Moving them somewhere where they are confined is a good idea.  I would place a towel half way over the box so it feels like a den to her.  It is important to keep any other pets and young children away from her, so she does not feel overwhelmed, or she will want to move them again.

If she gets frantic and begins carrying a kitten around incessantly, out her in a carrier for an hour or two where she can hear the kittens.  The pressure from the unnursed milk will make her settle in and nurse the kittens.  Usually, she will forget about wanting to move them.

Best regards... Norm.
