Question
Dear Michelle,  My cat is a little over 10 years old.  He has feline urinary tract syndrome (since any early age) and eats a prescription food to maintain his health.  I have his urine checked every 6 months and regular annual check-ups.  Recently my cat has started limping after he gets up from his nap.  The vet gave me a prescription called Cosequin.  I was wondering about your knowledge on this drug and its side-effects if any. Do you recommend its use?
Thanks so much,
Heidi

Answer
From what I have heard about this medicine, it is usually used for arthritis (joint relief) in both dogs and cats. It is made up of natural ingedients, so the side-effects and long term effects are rare.

Cosequin for Cats contains a combination of TRH112 sodium chondroitin sulfate, FCHG49 glucosamine hydrochloride, and manganese ascorbate to help maintain the structure of your cat's joint cartilage while slowing down the enzymes that break down cartilage.

Brand Name
Cosequin For Cats (Nutramax)

Active Ingredient(s): Glucosamine (125mg), Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate (100mg), Manganese (1mg)

What is this product used for: Cosequin For Cats is a nutritional supplement to help cats maintain healthy joints. Cosequin is an exclusive formula to support and maintain the health of a pet's joints.

Availability: Cosequin For Cats is a non-prescription (OTC) product available as sprinkle capsules.

How this product should be used: The usual starting dose, for the first 4 to 6 weeks, for cats under 10 lbs is the contents of 1 capsule sprinkled on food once a day and for cats over 10 lbs give the contents of 2 capsules sprinkled on food once a day. After 4 to 6 weeks, use a maintenance dose giving the product every other day instead of once a day.

What are the side effects: Side effects are rare but may include diarrhea.

What special precautions are there: This product is not intended to be used in place of other treatments in the presence of an infection or if surgery is needed.

In the event of overdose: Overdose is not likely but may result in diarrhea.

How should I store this product: Store the container in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight. Keep the lid tightly closed. Keep out of the reach of children

I myself have never used it, but in my opinion, it is not a harmful medication.
Keep an eye on your cat to see how it effects him, and stop using it if he has a reaction.

Good luck to you!
