cat has puss in its eye

Question
We brought a kitten home the other day and i think it had a upper respitory infection well it has worked its way around the house to all the cats. But my Siamese cat got it the worst. Her eyes were really bad. It seems that it has stopped oozing puss but now she is losing hair around her eye that it was the worst in. Also before that happened she lost alot of weight suddenly. she is like anorexic skinny. She eats though. Its not like we starve her. But that happened after she had her 2nd litter of kittens. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Answer
Hi Jamie.  This is definitely something that calls for the attention of a vet.  Siamese are genetically predisposed to suffer seriously from upper respiratory infections, and antibiotics will probably be needed for that.  Only a vet can make that determination and provide the proper medication.

Malnourishment is sometimes seen in cats if they have litters too often, if their diet isn't rich enough in fat or protein to support their litter, or if their litter is too big for them to nurse without being supplemented with bottle feeding.  It's recommended to feed nursing cats kitten food and sometimes to supplement their diets with kitten formula offered in a saucer.  This can help replace some of the nutrients lost through breast feeding.  But there are many other health problems that could be causing weight loss, including high thyroid, kidney disease, diabetes, feline leukemia, feline AIDS, and a number of parasites.

I would recommend to have the new kitten tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, too.  These are two deadly viruses that could potentially spread to your other cats.  While feline AIDS is really only contagious through deep bite wounds and isn't likely to spread in a friendly home, feline leukemia spreads through friendly grooming and sharing water bowls as well as bite wounds.  You'll want to make sure the new kitten is free of this virus before letting him mingle too much with all the kitties in your house.  I've kept AIDS positive cats with my cats for a long time and never had the disease spread.  But I had one leukemia positive cat in my house without knowing it, and it spread like wildfire.
