Question about a cat

Question
I have what I think is a female cat (not sure if spayed or not). Big kitty, about fifteen pounds. My question is: She has a nipple infection and she's not going to the vet until Tuesday, is there anything I can do to maybe help her out a bit? I've been putting peroxide on the nipples and antibiotic ointment, can't think of what else I can do. Any ideas?

Answer
Andrea,

Sorry I am so late getting back to you, but I just got back from a meeting in Reno, NV.

Anyway, keep an eye on the nipple and make sure to let the vet know immediately if it is going necrotic (turning black).  Getting the cat to the vet, is clearly, the correct thing to do! The anti-biotic ointment may not do much good as the cat will, almost immediately lick it off.  What you might do is to rinse the area with a liquid anti-biotic (like novasan in warm water, at the proper dilution, twice a day) and then rinse with warm water again.  Using peroxide is the right idea, but novasan is better.

Most likely, if the cat has a mastitis, this can be very serious and is best treated with a strong anti-biotic (like Baytril) internally.

BTW, if the cat is not spayed (and the vet should be able to determine this), have her spayed to help avoid these and other problems.

Not to be alarmist, but there is always a chance the cat has mammary cancer, and your vet would probably check for this somewhat remote possibility.

Best regards... Norm.
