Nocturnal Cat Activity

Question
I recently saved a young female cat from being taken to the Humane Society. We do not know for sure how old she is, but think that she is about two years. She had been abandoned with her mate and the five kittens by an evicted tennant in the Apt. building my friend manages. The day I took her in, was the first day she stopped nursing and was seperated from her last 2 kittens. She had had five. My friend had found homes for 3 of them. He was going to have to take her and the last 2 kittens to the Humane Society.
I live in a very, very small room. During the day - my new kitty and I seem to get along just great. At night however - she is often very restless. She goes to the door and crys over & over. She also has taken to running back and forth between two windows. One is at one end of the room - the other is on the opposite end. She climbs up in one window ... meows incessantly, then runs to the other window and does the same. She is driving me crazy. I have lost sooo much sleep. Right now, I am running on 4 hours sleep. This little kitty is very loving - really the sweetest cat I have ever met. We have only been together for about a week.
I know she needs to be spayed.
I know she was abandoned by her previous
  humans.
I know she has never been outside - indoor
  cat to this point.
I know I would like to let her outside, but
am afraid she will get runover or something
if I do - since she has always been indoors.
  I know cats are nocturnal.
But - isn't there anything I can do to get more sleep? I would never leave her outside at night - even if you could suggest a way to transition her safely into an indoor/outdoor cat. I just know it would help if she wasn't cooped up in this room all the time. Maybe going outside isn't even the solution - I just don't know. She is not my first cat. I guess it didn't dawn on me what it would be like for her in a small room. (I have lived here 4 years) All I thought about was that she would likely be euthanized if she went to the Humane Society, that cats love me, that I had fallen for her, and that I could give her lots of love.

Answer
I wouldn't let a cat outside like this.  As for the cat being playful, it's probably age, yet it could be because of the new location, or a behavioral issue. Any ways, you should talk to a vet to make sure the cat is in good health, due to how you got it. The size of the place may make the cat want to go out more. Talk to a vet and ask another expert for more help. Good luck and sorry
