my kitten is having kittens

Question
I have a kitten that I got from work. I found out that she was pregnant. I am not sure exactly how old she is I would say six months tops. I have never had a pregnant cat before and I am kinda freaking out. My boyfriend is telling me that she has mucousy liquid coming out and that her belly is contracting. I know that it can take a while, but is it healthy for her to be having babies so young? And what if she got pregnant by one of her brothers is that bad too?

Answer
Hi Sara.....breathe....relax....:)
Everything will be fine with your little girl. Mother nature really has a way of taking care of things. IF she is pregnant and If she is only 6 months and IF she was bred by her brother, there is nothing you can do at this point except to take care of her from this point forward. None of these things would have happened if you had been a part of her life sooner. So you just need to make the best of a bad situation. She needs to be on a high quality kitten food with lots of fresh water. She needs a quiet dark place with a cozy box to have her kittens. She needs to feel safe (no dogs, young children, or other cats harassing her) If the kittens are from her brother they will most likely be fine because I am assuming she is an alley cat and has not been inbred herself. So, an inbreeding once will probably still give healthy kittens. It sounds like she is close to delivering. That mucous is her plug coming out and that usually happens about 24 hours before labor however it sounds like she is in labor already so you should have a kitten shortly! She will mostly need companionship when she is delivering. You will want to have a clean dry towel handy in case she is unable or unwilling to get a kitten out of it's sack but that is a rarity. Her instincts should kick in and she will know exactly what to do with the kittens!
What you need to do, is keep her inside so she does NOT get pregnant again before you can get her spayed. Some cats come into heat as soon as they deliver!! So watch her carefully and check with your vet what the earliest date is that you can get her spayed...
Good luck and enjoy the kittens!
