Granmother, Mother and the kittens

Question
Dear Jessica,
I have two female cats (mother (11 yrs old) and daughter (2 yrs old) who have always been the most friendly with each other (to an extreme of not being able to be separated).  A couple of days ago, my youngest cat had 6 kittens for the first time.  She is not a good mother, as she leaves them alone for a long time, and doesnt seem very concerned.  Her mother on her side, doesnt allow her to come close to her, whilst also ignoring the kittens.
Could you advise me on how to help my cats get along, and surpass what it must be some type of jealousy...?
Thank you

Answer
I would have the new mother seen by a vet.  When a kitty isn't a good mother, it's often because she's ill.

However, the behavior changes you're seeing can be considered normal, and I would just go with it rather than trying to intervene.  A batch of new kittens in the home can be stressful to all.  Once the kittens are weaned, you should see your two kitties' relationship getting back to normal.
