Question
my older cat keeps hissing at two month old kitten how do i make peace between them

Answer
Jeannie,

How old is the kitten?  How long have they been together?

In essence, the behavior is normal and you just need patience and indulgence to let them work it out.  Please do not separate them.  They may make a lot of noise and even loosen up some fur, but neither will hurt the other.

Human interference is counter productive in these situations.  You just need to let them adjust.  It may be just a few days for them to make peace or, it may be several weeks.  Every once in a while to cats just do not get a long (but that is fairly rare).

If they begin to play chase, even if it ends in a "fight", that is a good sign.

Some things which may help:

Keep in mind that adult cats are usually tolerant of kittens.

Having another food dish may be helpful.

Having another litter pan in a different part of the household may be helpful.

The 9 year old may be a bit jealous of the new kitten, so lavish extra attention and treats on the established cat.  It may even think the kitten is a good thing.

Please keep me posted.

Good luck and best regards... Norm.
