cat stalking dog

We have had our cat six years and brought another cat into the house for years later, all was ok. Four months ago we got a staffi puppy the eldest cat was nerves at start but then let the dog know that he was the boss but always got out the dogs way. Two days ago, the cat started to stalk the dog and the dog is terrifyed!! Me and my mother were playing with the cat and the dog stroled in then suddenly the cat ran for him and pounced on top of him. The dog squeled, the cat done that about four times. The next day my mother went out and it happened again the dog was outside when i opened the door the cat flew out and chased him across the whole garden.

I had a cat that did the same thing to any dog.  I never did figure out how to prevent that kind of behavior.  The only thing I can suggest is to investigate clicker training.  This technique has had excellent results in behavior modification.
