terminal cancer care

Question
I saw that you have experience in caring for cats with terminal cancer.  My cat is
a month shy of turning 20 years old.  The vet said he is in great condition (he
eats & drinks well and shows no sign of pain) other than the inoperable
abdominal tumor.  Do you have any tips or suggestions to make his life more
pleasant?

Answer
Hi Alicia.  So sorry to hear about your kitty's diagnosis.  I had a cat diagnosed with a cancerous mass in his liver last July, and he is beginning to slow down now.  Something that's helped put a spring back in his step the last few days is a steroid called prednisone.  It acts as a general anti-inflammatory that may help reduce some discomfort associated with cancer.

At this point, I also spoil him with treats of whatever meats he wants to eat, provided it's not cooked with anything toxic, like garlic or onions.  Natural meats (as opposed to cured meats which are high in sodium) are a good treat for cats because they're protein, something a cat's body has a high demand for, anyway.

In the later stages, you may need to think about the use of a heavier pain reliever if he shows signs of obvious discomfort.  There are some opioid medications that can be formulated to give orally.  This is the stage when most would agree euthanasia becomes the kindest choice.

I hope he enjoys his 20th birthday with lots of love!
