Cats Litter Box

Question
We have 2 cats and 2 litter boxes. Both cats go in both litter boxes. 1 is upstairs and 1 is downstairs (we live in a colonial). We have to move the upstairs litter box as we are converting the empty room into an office. My question is: Should we relocate that box to the basement or eliminate it entirely?

Answer
Linda,

I would keep the second litter box and show them where you have relocated it.  Also, I would close out the room the second litter box is in until you are sure they are using the basement litter box.  Cats are usually pretty smart about this kind of thing, but whenever yoiu change litter pan locations, type or brand of litter and the like, there are bound top be accidents, so please be patient.

Also, cats often have different rules about different litter pans, one may be used primarily by one cat and the other by the the other cat. They might use one litter box for peeing and one for pooping.  You just have to be patient when you do your relocation.

Best regards... Norm.
