Aggressivity

Question
In December I bought a male seal point siamese from a
respectable breeder. The cat was 4 months old and had been
neutered. Its name is Misha.
It has a very loving character. He loves to play and to stay with
people. Other children come to our house and play with it
without any problems. We got him a stuffed mouse and he loved
it. He plays with it all the time and often brings it to us.
Today, Misha suddenly grabbed the mouse and would come near
us making threatening sounds. When I tried to caress it, it
attacked me (but did not succeeded in biting me). I scared it
with my shoe and took the stuffed mouse and hid it. Then Misha
became nice again.
Why is it doing that and what should we do?

Answer
Hi Marcelo.  This is an unpleasant surprise, I know!  But it is a completely normal reaction.  Cats can become very possessive when it comes to their property, and most especially, their prey.  It's in their very nature to fight to keep what they've "killed" for food.  Their survival depends on it.  And while Misha is in no danger of starvation and won't eat his toy mouse, the instinct to defend his catch is still there.  It's not unusual to see cats growl and hiss and slap at anyone who comes near them when they have their toys or have caught something they hunted.  For the good of all, throw out Misha's toy mouse, and give him toys to play with like balls, instead.  Stay away from toys with fur or feathers, as these tend to cause a cat to protect them aggressively.
