Hello there, well, as you can tell from the title, I am having some troubles with an adopted male persian cat.  He's just begun peeing in different areas of the house, which I'm assuming, is his way of marking his territory.  I've never had a male cat, so this is new.  We also have a female cat in the house as well.  I'm afraid, if this doesn't stop, we'd have to part with him.  Do you know of any ways to help him not do this?  We really love him but can't have a cat that continues to behave in this manner.  Thank you so much! -Daniel

Daniel,

The most important question to ask is whether this Persian is neutered.

If not, then neutering should help.

If the cat is neutered, then the problem could be physical or behavioral.  To determine this, you need to take your kitty to the vet for a physical work up.  Of course, you will tell the vet what the problem is.

If the cat is not having a physical problem, then it is probably behavioral.  If you have just adopted him, what is his age?  He may be having some problem adjusting, especially if there are other pets.  Are their other pets?

In any event, I can email you an article of litterbox problems written by a vet who is also a cat breeder.  Please give me your email address and I will get that to you.

Best regards... Norm.

Norm, thank you SO much for you help with this!  Here are a few additional details.  Podder (his name) is neutered and his is declawed front and back.  We do have another cat in the house.  She is about 12 years old and will have nothing to do with him.  We have him stay in one part of the house, while the other cat (Tasha) stays in the other.  Once he got the curauge to venture out into Tasha's "area", he then would turn around in certain areas and spray (mark his territory).  It looked odd the way he was doing it...and my wife immediately identified it as marking his territory.  We've taken him to the vet...they've guessed him to be about 5 years old.  He seems to use his litter box just fine in the room where he stays.  Does this help give you some additional perspective on the situation?  The vet has said he's healthy at this point...but.  And we have treated him for Geardia (paracite).  I will look forward to hearing back soon.  Thank you again! -Daniel

Answer
Daniel,

Gee, all the easy fixes are ruled out!  But, you have hit the nail on the head in that he may be marking his territory.

One other simple question is when you have noticed him doing his "territory marking" dance, are you sure there was actually something where he "aimed"  I have seen cats go through this tail wiggling dance and never really spray anything!

In any case, if you include your email, I can still send you the article I alluded to.

Also, you may want to get an enzyme based pet stain cleaner like Outright or Simple Solution from you friendly neighborhood pet supermarket.  If he is, indeed, spraying, one of these products will help neutralize the pet odor.  Also, if he is indeed spraying, you could try a Fel-o-way (a pheremone based spray) diffuser which has been known to help curtail or eliminate male spraying in a given room.

Best regards... Norm.
