birth of kittens

Question
My cat had her kittens some time between 1am and 7am today. Although her belly is considerably smaller, it is still as big as it was two weeks ago. I am worried that something has gone wrong. She has given birth twice before with no problems. This seems unusual. Is it ok, should i take her to the vet? I know time is crucial.
Thank you in advance for your help!!!!

Answer
Hi Kathy, It is quite common for a cat to be very big even after having her litter. Her uterus is very swollen and it will take a couple of days for it to come down to a more normal size. Of course there is always the possibility of a retained kitten or afterbirth and you can tell by other signs. For example is she content and caring for the babies? or is she restless and pacing?? Is she eating? even a little bit? cats don't usually eat too much right after delivering but she should be able to eat something. Can you feel any movement? Don't be fooled by "bumps" as that is how she should feel right after delivery... but if they are moving bumps then that is a concern !
Let me know! Teresa
