Persian not using litter box

Question
I recently got a 7 yr old Persian from an older lady that is sick and can't take care of her.  I've had the cat for about 3 weeks.  She uses her litter box when I'm not there but I come home from work, she will go on the bed or on the pillows.  I have a cleaner from the pet store and use it on the spots.  Why is she doing this and how can I stop it?

Answer
Angela,

Wow, this is one complicated situation.  You have a cat who is fairly mature and very set in her ways.  She has gone through some major stress and loss and has had her whole world turned upside down.  Now she is in your house and is probably unsure how to relate to you.

So, what I would do is to have patience and put some plastic on your bed and pillows (cats normally hate to pee on anything that would splash back).

Also, I am giving you a link to a series of articles on feline litter box problems which may give you a hint.

It could be so many possibilities, from a medical problem, to separation anxiety, to the brand or type of litter, the placement of the litter pan, etc.  This may give you some better idea as to what may be going on.
