hi Norm , my coon seems to be afraid of human contact...he is a show cat in Japan and has been to many shows before ... we just imported him from Japan and he's been with us since march2006.......any idea why the sudden change in character coz he used to be a friendly cat as per the breeder.........we have a show this coming sept and would appreciate if u could advise us on ways to win back his trust ........pls pls help us ...thanking u in advance bye ...........NUR SINGAPORE.....

Are there are any other cats or pets in the household?  If so, how did you introduce him.  How is how you are housing the cat differ from the people in Japan.  That is, did they cage the cat or not.  Do you cage the cat or not?

Cats are often as attached to their territory as they are their human owners.  A major change creates unsureness in the cat, often making them shy.

In the past, what I have done with a newly acquired cat, who is showing shyness, is to ignore the cat.  When the cat is ready for my affection, it will come to me and let me pet it.  The more the cat thinks it is their idea, the better the cat will accept affection and lose some of the shyness.

Your cat needs to get used to its new surroundings.  You need to keep from approaching the cat (except maybe to feed).  In time, the cat, if usually affectionate, will come to you when it is ready.  If you try to rush this, it will result in a set back and the making up between you and the new cat will take longer.
