cats marking territory?

Question
I have two indoor cats. 1 male, 13 yrs old, 1 female, 9 yrs. old. Both are fixed. I live in the country. My neighbors have outdoor cats. I have lived here since 12/2003, no problems but in the last couple of weeks, the neighbor's cats are coming over and urinating at my front door and the odor is horrible. I have seen them looking in my front room window so they have probably seen my cats. Why are they doing this now and what can I do about the problem? If you have any ideas, I would be open to hearing them. Thanks, Denise

Answer
They are, indeed, marking territory because they have detected the scent of your cats. I think your best option is to get some repellent to place around your door. Lambert Kay makes some repellent granules called Boundary that are available at Petsmart. I haven't used them myself but I think they would probably be more convenient and effective than the repellents that I HAVE tried, since those were sprays that had to be reapplied every day or so. Give them a try, I think they will make a difference.

It would also make sense to first spray the front door area with one of the many products available to clean up urine stains/smells. Simple Solution is the one I like best and it is available in a spray.

Hope this helps
