toilet training my 2 cats

I am currently training my two cats to use the toilet. We are at the point where the training toilet insert is in. The younger cat does not seem to have any trouble, however, the older cat (only about 1 1/2) can not seem to aim when she urinates so most of it ends up on the floor. The problem seems that she is too close to the edge because she is not putting any paws on the rim on the toilet seat. This is the first week so there is no hole in the insert yet.

If we don't figure out something soon my boyfriend wants to throw in the towel, but I am committed to teaching them how to do this. Is there anything I can do to show her how to do this right or is it a lost cause?

I have though long and hard about this, and cannot think of any obvious way to change her postion without having her just not use the toilet at all.  Things that cats do not like are sticky tape (like 2-sided tape) or aluminum foil. So you may be able to do something with that.  

She is very new at this and, so, she may get the hang of it.
