New kitten and 1 year old cat

Question
Hello,

I have recently gotten a new kitten. She is a month and 1 week old. Her mother was taken away from her when she was only a few weeks old. The Veterinarian that I got her from had too many animals at the hospital and could not keep her there so I said that I would take her home with me. She is the second cat that I've owned so I don't really know that much about there behavior toward one another. I have a one year old tabby named Remy and when I brought the new kitten home he became very annoyed and began hissing and growling at her. He ran into my bathroom and now will not come out. When I try to get him to go to the bathroom or eat or even play with him he will just hiss and growl at me. I try to pet him to let him know that it is ok but he just hisses at me when I try to do that too. I really don't want to get rid or her or Remy. Remy is neutered and I will have the girl spayed as soon as I can if I can keep her. I'm afraid that he will begin to use the bathroom in the house instead of in his litter box. Please I really don't know what to do. I have her in her own cage with food and water and a litter box and a bed. The cage is a bar cage so that Remy and the new kitten can get to know each other without the fear of him hurting her. But he will not come near it or anywhere where he thinks she might be. Also when left in the cage the new kitten begins to meow frantically. I feel bad for leaving her in there but I can't have her out if Remy is going to hurt her. Please if you have any advice for me it would be greatly appreciated. If I'm doing anything wrong then please let me know. I really want them to get along. Also how long does it usually take for them to get use to the other cat. I feel bad when I play with one and not the other and the other cat sees me playing with them. I don't know if that hurts the situation or not but I try to play with both at the same time and Remy will not have that. Is there any hope that they will get along? I'm very worried and I really don't know what to do, this is only the first day of having her at home as well so I could just be worried for nothing but I'm still concerned. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Breanna,

You might want to take a look at a cat introduction protocol. They explain what you need to do when introducing a new kitten into your home. Follow the instructions. Here's one for example.

The biggest thing you need is patience. It may take a little while. It can take up to a few months. I have one here that took a year. Remy will come around in time. Good luck
