side effects of cortisone on a cat

Question
about a week ago i took my almost 2 yr old cat to the vet to get her rabies shot, and because she was itching to the point of bleeding around her neck and just above her eyes, he gave her a cortisone shot along with the rabies shot and a distemper (just cause she never had one before). now all my baby girl does is lay around and sleep. at first she slept for like 2 days straight, now she will get up once in a while through out the night and want to eat, but the spoiled brat wants treats, and not her food. so that's what i give her just so i know that she is eating. but i am wondering if she will go back to normal once the cortisone wears off??? please please please tell me that my once loving, playful cat will go back to her normal self and not this lay around do nothing but sleep zombied cat that growls at anyone who touches her but me.

Answer
Lee,

I am not a vet, but I do wonder why your vet gave both the rabies and distemper (hopefully the 3 in 1 shot) at the same time.  We like to give 3 weeks between vaccinations so the cat's immune system can get over the first challenge before it is challenged again.

Give her about 3 weeks and she should be OK. If not, I would go back to your vet.

Also, did anyone try to find out why the cat is overgrooming? It is so easy to treat a symptom without trying to find the root cause.

As for eating and treats, no healthy two year old cat is going to starve itself to death.  Cats can go a few days without eating with no ill effects. She may be manipulating you into giving her more treats by refusing her food! Don't let her get away with this behavior or she will turn finicky on you. Our cats eat what they are given or they do not eat at all, unless they are ill and being nursed back to health.

Best regards... Norm.
